Austin Peay State University is an accredited public university, operated by the Tennessee Board of Regents, located in Clarksville, TN, which is the county seat of Montgomery County, TN, USA, ranked the 5th largest city in the state, with a population estimated at nearly 120 000 inhabitants, during the census of 2008.
Clarksville was incorporated in 1785, and it was named after General George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War hero and frontier fighter, the city also being known as `The Queen City` or `Gateway to the New South`.
APSU first started as Austin Peay Normal School, created by the Act of the General Assembly of 1927, as a 2-year junior college and teacher-learning institution, being named after Governor Austin Peay, who was on his 3rd term when the school was founded.
In January '99, a devastating tornado struck the city and APSU campus, significantly damaging it. The university quickly initiated `Operation Restoration`, committing to reopen its doors within one week. However, many of the gravely damaged buildings were re-opened within 1 year.
Even though, the university had limited resources at first, it managed to grow, over the years, taking place among the universities and colleges, managed by the State Board of Education. Today, APSU has a total enrollment of more than 10 000 students, being accredited to grant various degrees, including Bachelor of Fine Arts and Education Specialist Degrees, as well as Master of Music degree, Master Arts in Education degree and Bachelor of Professional Studies.
The athletic teams from APSU are known as the Tennessee Titans, who compete in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), being nicknamed as the `Governors`, in honor of Governor Austin Peay, after whom the university is named. The university also participates in the Pioneer Football League, in football, having a basketball team, as well, coached by Dave Loos, who according to specialists, is on his way to becoming one of the most respected coaches in the conference.
